Summary
For conference goers, Honolulu offers world-class venues with a backdrop of beaches, culture, and natural wonders, making every event both productive and memorable.
- Diamond Head crater hike - A 2.4 km return trail to the summit of the extinct volcanic crater; the best early-morning view of Waikiki and the Pacific coastline.
- Waimea Bay (North Shore) - 45 minutes by bus or car from Honolulu; the best surf beach in Hawaii, spectacular even when the waves are small in summer.
- Pearl Harbor - The USS Arizona Memorial is free but book a timed entry pass in advance; the Battleship Missouri and Pacific Aviation Museum require separate tickets.
- Kapiolani Park and Waikiki - The park adjacent to the beach has free hula and music performances on most weekend mornings.
- Manoa Falls trail - A 2.4 km hike through lush rainforest to a 46-metre waterfall; completely different landscape from the beach side of the island.
- Leonard’s Bakery malasadas - The Portuguese doughnut tradition carried to Hawaii; Leonard’s on Kapahulu Avenue has been making them since 1952.
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is 4 miles from downtown Honolulu and 9 miles from Waikiki. The TheBus Route 20 connects the airport to Waikiki in about 60 minutes; rideshare is faster at 20-25 minutes and more practical for conference attendees with luggage.
TheBus covers the main Oahu corridors and is one of the better US city bus systems, connecting Waikiki, downtown, and the University area. Rideshare is widely available. The Waikiki and downtown areas are walkable, though the Hawaiian heat makes longer walks tiring.
Hawaii has a pleasant climate year-round with temperatures between 22-30C. The drier season runs from April to October, which is ideal for outdoor activities. Winter brings more rain, particularly on the windward (northeast) side of the island, but Waikiki on the leeward side stays mostly dry year-round.
