Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City, still widely called Saigon, is Vietnam’s largest city and the centre of its economy. It is louder, faster and more commercial than Hanoi, and where Hanoi has a thousand years of imperial history, Saigon’s character comes from trade, French colonial building and the twentieth century.
Almost everything a conference visitor needs sits in the central district along the Saigon River, between Nguyen Hue Boulevard, which was pedestrianised in 2015, and Dong Khoi Street. The Opera House, the Central Post Office, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Ben Thanh Market and most of the international hotels are inside a walkable square kilometre or so.
A note on addresses. Vietnam reorganised its local-government units in 2025, and central Saigon addresses are now often written as Sai Gon Ward where they previously said District 1. Maps, hotel listings and conference sites have not all caught up, so you will see both forms for the same place. They mean the same area.
- War Remnants Museum - The most affecting museum in the city and the one most visitors find hardest to forget. Confronting, and presented from a Vietnamese perspective.
- Independence Palace - The former presidential palace, preserved almost exactly as it was in 1975, with the command bunker below.
- Central Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral - Both French colonial, both a few minutes from the conference district.
- Ben Thanh Market - Central, touristy, and still the easiest introduction to the food.
- Cu Chi Tunnels - The Viet Cong tunnel network about 60 km northwest, a standard half-day trip.
- Mekong Delta - A long but rewarding day trip south.
Tan Son Nhat International (SGN) is unusually close, about 7 km northwest of the centre, which is 20 to 40 minutes by road depending entirely on traffic. There is no rail link to the airport. The city’s first metro line opened in December 2024 but runs east from Ben Thanh, not to the airport, so a taxi or a Grab car is the normal choice. Book Grab from inside the terminal rather than accepting a kerbside offer.
The central district is genuinely walkable and most conference attendees will not need transport for the venue itself. Beyond that, Grab is the default for both cars and motorbike taxis, and it is cheap. Metro Line 1 runs from Ben Thanh east to Suoi Tien and is useful for a few specific trips rather than for getting around the centre. Crossing the road takes some nerve: traffic is dense and mostly motorbikes, and the technique is to walk at a slow, steady, predictable pace and let it flow around you rather than stopping suddenly.
The dry season runs roughly December to April and is the comfortable window, warm and bright at 25 to 33C. May to November is the wet season, which does not mean constant rain but does mean heavy afternoon downpours most days, usually short. Temperatures barely move across the year; humidity is the variable. A conference in June or July will be hot and wet, and an umbrella is worth more than a raincoat.

For a conference in the centre there is little reason to stay anywhere but the central district around Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi. It holds the international hotels, the restaurants and most of the sights, and it is walkable. Pham Ngu Lao, about 1.5 km west, is the backpacker area and is much cheaper and much noisier. Thao Dien in Thu Duc is the expatriate district and is pleasant but too far out to commute from daily. Hotel prices here are low by international standards, so the gap between a good mid-range room and a luxury one is smaller than you would expect.
