Helsinki Finland
Helsinki is the capital of Finland, spread across a peninsula and islands on the Baltic Sea. It is a compact, orderly, design-obsessed city, with the neoclassical Senate Square at its heart, the Design District’s studios and boutiques to the south, and striking modern architecture from the Oodi central library to the Amos Rex art museum. The sea is everywhere: ferries run constantly to the UNESCO-listed island fortress of Suomenlinna, and public saunas along the shore are part of daily life. For conference travelers Helsinki is easy, safe, and efficient, with the airport a short train ride away and most of the center walkable.
- Suomenlinna - The UNESCO island fortress, a 15-minute ferry from Market Square.
- Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral - The neoclassical heart of the city.
- Oodi Library and Amos Rex - Landmark modern architecture facing the central station area.
- Design District - Blocks of studios, galleries, and boutiques south of the center.
- Löyly or Allas - Modern public saunas on the Baltic shore, a quintessential Helsinki experience.
Helsinki Airport (HEL) is about 17 km north of the center and is the main gateway to Finland and a major hub for Asia-Europe routes. The I and P commuter trains reach the central station in about 30 minutes, and taxis take 20 to 30 minutes.
Helsinki’s trams, metro, buses, and commuter trains run on a single HSL ticket, and the compact center is very walkable. The I and P trains link the airport to the central station in about 30 minutes. Ferries to Suomenlinna leave from the Market Square and are covered by the same tickets.
Summer (June to August) is the classic time, with long white nights and terrace life. February, when IUI is held, is deep winter: short days, temperatures often well below freezing, and snow, so pack properly warm clothing. Winter Helsinki has its own appeal, with saunas, candlelit cafes, and possible sea ice.
