Heidelberg Germany

Heidelberg sits in the Rhine-Neckar valley where the Neckar river cuts through the Odenwald hills before opening into the Rhine plain. The castle above the old town is one of the most-visited ruins in Germany, and the Altstadt below it is well-preserved and genuinely pleasant to walk through. Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, gives the city a permanent academic character that makes it a natural host for specialist conferences. The conference crowd here tends to be security researchers and technical practitioners, drawn by events like Troopers. Rail connections are good: ICE trains reach Frankfurt Airport in about 45 minutes and Stuttgart in around 40 minutes. The city is compact enough that most hotels are within walking distance of the main conference venues.

What to Do
  • Heidelberg Castle - The ruined Renaissance castle above the old town is the city’s defining landmark, with panoramic views over the Neckar valley from the terrace.
  • Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) - The 18th-century stone bridge across the Neckar is the most photographed spot in the city.
  • Philosophenweg (Philosophers Walk) - A hillside path above the north bank of the Neckar with views back over the castle and old town.
  • Heidelberg University Library - One of the great German research libraries, with a collection of medieval manuscripts and a fine reading room.
  • Hauptstrasse - The main pedestrian street through the old town, lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants.
Getting There

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is the closest major hub, about 80 km north. Direct ICE trains run from Frankfurt Airport regional station to Heidelberg in around 45 minutes. Stuttgart Airport (STR) is about 90 km south with connecting trains.

Getting Around

Heidelberg is highly walkable in the old town and central areas. The tram network connects the main station to the old town and university areas. Bikes are popular. Most conference venues are reachable on foot from central hotels.

Weather & Timing

Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal. Summer is warm and busy with tourists. The Troopers conference in June catches the city in good weather.
