Hannover Germany

Hannover is the capital of Lower Saxony in northern Germany, a city of around 500,000 that punches above its weight as a conference and trade fair destination. The Deutsche Messe exhibition complex on the city’s northeast edge is the largest trade fair ground in the world, but the city centre is entirely separate - compact, walkable, and anchored by the Maschsee, a large artificial lake created in the 1930s that functions as the city’s recreational centrepiece. The Altstadt around the Marktkirche and the Leineschloss gives a sense of the old city, though much of central Hannover was rebuilt after heavy Second World War bombing. The Herrenhausen Gardens, a short tram ride from the centre, are among the finest baroque gardens in Germany and worth a visit. Hannover has a large student population thanks to Leibniz University and the University of Applied Sciences, which gives the city an active bar and restaurant scene disproportionate to its relatively modest international profile. Hannover Airport (HAJ) connects to most major European hubs with short flight times to Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt, and Zurich.

What to Do
  • Herrenhausen Gardens - A UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the Great Garden, one of the finest surviving baroque formal gardens in Europe, with a large fountain and regular cultural events in summer.
  • Maschsee lake - The city’s main recreational area, a 2.4-kilometre artificial lake in the city centre with swimming, boat hire, and lakeside bars and restaurants. The annual Maschsee Festival in late July and August brings food and music to the banks.
  • Sprengel Museum - One of the best modern art museums in Germany, on the southwestern shore of the Maschsee, with a strong collection of German Expressionism and postwar art.
  • Altstadt and Marktkirche - The reconstructed old city around the 14th-century market church, with the colourful facades of the Leibnizhaus and the Leineschloss (now the state parliament).
  • Hannover Zoo - A well-regarded zoo particularly known for its naturalistic jungle and gorilla enclosures, a 10-minute walk from the city centre.
  • Day trip to Hamelin - The town of the Pied Piper legend is 45 minutes by regional train and has an exceptionally well-preserved medieval Weser Renaissance townscape.
Getting There

Hannover Airport (HAJ) is 11 kilometres north of the city centre. The S5 S-Bahn runs directly to Hannover Hauptbahnhof (main station) in around 17 minutes for around 4 EUR - one of the best airport rail connections in Germany. Taxis take 20-25 minutes and cost around 25-30 EUR.

Getting Around

The S-Bahn and U-Bahn network is extensive and reliable, covering the airport, main station, and all city-centre neighbourhoods. A Hannover Card gives unlimited transit access plus museum discounts. Cycling is widespread and well-catered for. Taxis are metered and readily available.

Weather & Timing

August (SOUPS 2026 dates) is Hannover’s warmest month at 20-25C with long evenings and generally dry weather. Summer is the best time to enjoy the Maschsee waterfront and the Herrenhausen Gardens. September is also pleasant. Winters are grey and cold.
