What to Do

The Mauritshuis museum is home to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp in an intimate 17th-century mansion - one of the finest small art museums in Europe. The Binnenhof (the working parliament buildings) can be viewed from the outside and on guided tours. The Peace Palace (Vredespaleis) is the seat of the International Court of Justice and visible from the street. Scheveningen, the North Sea beach town 5 km from the center, is worth visiting for the pier and fresh herring from street stalls. Delft and Rotterdam are both under 30 minutes by train for excellent day trips.

Getting There

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) is the nearest major hub, about 60 km north. Intercity trains connect Schiphol to Den Haag Centraal in about 50 minutes (direct) or 35 minutes to Den Haag HS station. Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) has limited European service and is 15 km east with bus connections.

Getting Around

The Hague has an excellent HTM tram network covering the city center, the government district, and the beach at Scheveningen. The area around the Binnenhof, Centrum, and the Peace Palace is walkable. Cycling is practical on the flat terrain. National rail connects The Hague to Amsterdam in 50 minutes and Rotterdam in 25 minutes.

Weather & Timing

Late spring (May-June) and summer (July-August) are the best for outdoor activities and the Scheveningen beach. The Dutch climate is temperate and changeable year-round; spring tulip season (April-May) is a draw for the whole Netherlands region. Winters are mild but grey and wet.
