Gwangju South Korea

Gwangju is the metropolis of Korea’s southwest, known nationally for three things: the 1980 democratic uprising whose memory shapes the city, the Asia Culture Center built to honor it, and food that Koreans travel for (the city’s table settings are legendarily generous). It hosts international events at the Kimdaejung Convention Center, and the KTX high-speed rail links Seoul in under two hours. It is a friendly, inexpensive, deeply Korean alternative to the capital’s crowds.

What to Do
  • Asia Culture Center - the vast underground arts complex on the May 18 square, the city’s landmark.
  • Yangdong Market - the great southern market; eat your way down the aisles.
  • Mudeungsan National Park - the columnar-rock mountain on the city’s edge, with trails from the tram-served lower slopes.
  • Penguin Village - the retro craft alley of Yangnim-dong beneath the missionary-era hill.
Getting There

Gwangju Airport (KWJ) has domestic links via Seoul Gimpo and Jeju; most international visitors fly to Incheon (ICN) and take the direct KTX from Seoul (about 2 hours to Gwangju-Songjeong).

Getting Around

Two metro lines plus cheap taxis and buses cover the city; the convention center has its own metro stop. KakaoT is the ride-hailing app; have T-money on your phone for transit.

Weather & Timing

April-June and September-November are the pleasant seasons (18-26C). April brings cherry blossoms; early April, around typical SAC dates, is a lovely time. Summer is hot and humid, winter cold and dry.
