Grand Forks United States

Grand Forks sits on the Red River of the North on the border between North Dakota and Minnesota, the third-largest city in North Dakota. It is anchored by the University of North Dakota, one of the oldest and largest universities in the region, which gives the city its student energy and hosts the IEEE CARS symposium. The historic downtown along the river was rebuilt and revitalised after a major 1997 flood and now has a compact strip of restaurants, breweries, and shops. It is a small, easy city to navigate, with the university campus, downtown, and most hotels a short drive apart. For a conference traveler, Grand Forks is a practical, no-frills destination: quiet, friendly, and affordable, with the Greenway parkland along the river good for a run between sessions. Winters are famously cold, but the late-October timing of CARS usually means crisp autumn weather rather than deep snow.

What to Do

The University of North Dakota campus is the heart of the city, with the Ralph Engelstad Arena, one of the finest college hockey arenas in the country, as a standout. The Greenway is a large riverfront park system along the Red River with trails for walking and cycling. Downtown Grand Forks has a cluster of local restaurants and breweries along the river. The North Dakota Museum of Art on campus is worth a visit. For a longer trip, the wide-open prairie landscape and dark night skies of the surrounding region are a draw in their own right.

Getting There

Grand Forks International Airport (GFK) has regional connections, primarily via Denver and Minneapolis. Many visitors fly into the larger Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP) hub and drive about 5 hours, or use Fargo’s Hector International Airport (FAR), about 80 minutes south. A car is the practical way in from any of these.

Getting Around

Grand Forks is a small, car-oriented city; most visitors rent a car or use rideshare, which is readily available. The University of North Dakota campus and downtown are about a 10-minute drive apart. Cities Area Transit runs local buses. Walking is comfortable within downtown and the campus itself.

Weather & Timing

Late spring through early autumn (May to September) is the most comfortable time, with warm summers around 25-28C. Late October, when CARS is held, is crisp autumn weather, typically 2-10C, so pack warm layers. Winters are long and very cold, often well below freezing with significant snow.
