Gothenburg Sweden

Gothenburg is Sweden’s second-largest city, a port on the west coast with a more relaxed character than Stockholm and a strong base in engineering, automotive, and software research, anchored by Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. The city has a compact, walkable center laid out around 17th-century Dutch-style canals, the long Avenyn boulevard, and the historic Haga district of wooden houses and cafes. Gothenburg has earned a serious food reputation, with several Michelin-starred restaurants and an exceptional seafood scene built around the Feskekorka fish market. Its location on the Gota alv river and the nearby Bohuslan archipelago gives easy access to islands and coastline. Gothenburg is well connected by rail, about 3 hours 30 minutes from both Stockholm and Copenhagen, and Goteborg Landvetter Airport offers direct flights across Europe.

What to Do
  • Haga district - The old working-class quarter of wooden houses, now full of cafes famous for oversized cinnamon buns.

  • Feskekorka - The church-shaped fish market hall, a Gothenburg institution for seafood lunches.

  • Southern archipelago - Car-free islands a short ferry ride from Saltholmen, ideal for a half-day escape from a conference.

  • Liseberg - One of the largest amusement parks in Scandinavia, central and a local landmark.

  • Universeum and the Museum of World Culture - A science center and an ethnographic museum, both strong options near the Korsvagen transit hub.

Getting There

Goteborg Landvetter Airport (GOT) is the main airport, about 20 minutes from the center by the Flygbussarna airport coach, with direct flights to major European hubs. Gothenburg City Airport (GSE) handles limited budget traffic. Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is a larger hub about 3 hours 30 minutes away by direct train and is a common routing for intercontinental arrivals.

Getting Around

Gothenburg has an extensive tram network, the largest in the Nordics, which covers the center and reaches Chalmers and the university areas. The center is also very walkable. Ferries run to the southern archipelago from Saltholmen. A Gothenburg City Card covers public transport and many attractions.

Weather & Timing

May to September is the best window, with long daylight, mild temperatures around 17-21C, and active archipelago and outdoor life. June, when UMAP is held, is one of the most pleasant months. Winters are dark and damp but rarely extremely cold for the latitude.
