What to Do

The CERN particle physics laboratory offers free guided tours and visits to the Globe of Science and Innovation - essential for scientists and engineers attending conferences in Geneva (book well in advance). The Old Town (Vieille Ville) with St Pierre Cathedral (climb the towers for Geneva and Alps views) and Place du Bourg-de-Four is a pleasant afternoon walk. The United Nations Palais des Nations and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum both offer tours. The Musee d’Art et d’Histoire has strong collections across all periods. Lake Geneva and the Jet d’Eau are iconic; a boat trip to Montreux (1 hour) or day trip to Chamonix (1 hour by bus) are excellent additions for those with extra time.

Getting There

Geneva Airport (GVA) is unusually close to the city, just 5 km from the center. The train station directly in the arrivals hall provides free tickets to the city (included with your flight boarding pass) for the 7-minute journey to Geneva Cornavin station. Taxis are also available but the train is faster and free.

Getting Around

Geneva has excellent public transport (TPG) including trams, buses, and boats on Lake Geneva, all covered by the same free ticket given to hotel guests. The city center, Old Town, and lakefront are very walkable. The jet d’eau (water jet), Jet d’Eau, is visible from most central locations. International rail connects Geneva to Lyon (2 hours), Zurich (2.5 hours), Paris (3 hours), and beyond.

Weather & Timing

Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal, with pleasant lake temperatures and good visibility to Mont Blanc and the Alps. Summer (July-August) is warm with a lively lakeside festival season. Winters are cold but relatively mild compared to the surrounding mountains, with occasional snow.
