Gandhinagar India

Gandhinagar is the planned capital of Gujarat, a green, orderly grid of a city that hosts DA-IICT (Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology), IIT Gandhinagar, and the GIFT City fintech district. It pairs naturally with Ahmedabad, the lively metropolis 25 kilometers south whose UNESCO-listed old city, food scene, and larger hotel market most visitors combine with a Gandhinagar conference. Gujarat is a dry state: alcohol is not sold, though visitors can obtain permits at some licensed hotel shops.

What to Do
  • Akshardham Gandhinagar - the vast pink-sandstone temple complex, the city’s landmark.
  • Ahmedabad’s old city - India’s first UNESCO World Heritage city; take the morning heritage walk from the Swaminarayan temple through the pols (historic housing clusters).
  • Sabarmati Ashram - Gandhi’s riverside ashram in Ahmedabad, moving and beautifully kept.
  • Gujarati thali - the region’s legendary all-you-can-eat vegetarian spread; Ahmedabad’s thali houses are the pilgrimage.
Getting There

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) in Ahmedabad is the gateway, about 30 minutes from Gandhinagar by road, with strong domestic connectivity and direct Gulf, Southeast Asia, and London links.

Getting Around

Ride-hailing (Uber, Ola) covers Gandhinagar and the Ahmedabad corridor cheaply; the Ahmedabad Metro’s extension links the two cities. Within Gandhinagar distances are short and roads are calm by Indian standards. For Ahmedabad evenings, budget 40 to 60 minutes each way by cab.

Weather & Timing

November to February is the season: dry, sunny, 12-30C. Summer (April to June) regularly exceeds 42C and the monsoon runs June to September. December, the main conference window, is reliably pleasant with cool evenings.

Where to Stay for a Conference

Gandhinagar’s Infocity/GIFT City area has the modern hotels closest to DA-IICT. Staying in Ahmedabad (Ashram Road or SG Highway) gives more choice and nightlife-free-but-lively evenings, at the cost of a 30-45 minute commute.
