Gaborone Botswana

Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana, a planned, modern city that grew rapidly after independence in 1966. It sits in the southeast of the country near the South African border, on the edge of the Kalahari. The city is a business and government center rather than a tourist hub, but it is a comfortable, safe base and the gateway to Botswana’s famous wildlife, from the nearby Gaborone Game Reserve to the Okavango Delta and Chobe further north. For conference visitors it offers good hotels and easy access to the African bush.

What to Do
  • Gaborone Game Reserve - A small reserve on the city edge with rhinos, antelope, and birdlife.
  • Three Dikgosi Monument - A landmark honoring the chiefs who secured Botswana’s independence.
  • Kgale Hill - A popular hike with views over the city.
  • Safari gateway - Onward trips to the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park.
Getting There

Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) is about 15 km north of the city, with regional connections via Johannesburg, the main southern African hub for international flights, about an hour away by air.

Getting Around

Gaborone is spread out and car-oriented, so taxis, ride-hailing, and rental cars are the main ways to get around. Shared minibuses serve local routes but are less practical for visitors. Most hotels are a short drive from the central business district.

Weather & Timing

The dry winter (May to August) is the most comfortable, with warm days, cool nights, and the best wildlife viewing. October, when CompEd was held, is hot and dry before the summer rains. Summers (November to March) are hot with afternoon thunderstorms.
