Eindhoven Netherlands

Eindhoven is the largest city in the south of the Netherlands and the country’s center of technology and design. It grew up around Philips, which was founded here, and today it anchors the Brainport region alongside the chip equipment maker ASML in nearby Veldhoven and the Eindhoven University of Technology. The city has reinvented its old industrial sites, most visibly at Strijp-S, a former Philips complex now full of studios, food halls, and music venues. It is a compact, modern, walkable city, better known for innovation, design, and football than for classic Dutch canals, and it hosts Dutch Design Week each October. For conference travelers it is easy to reach and easy to get around, with Amsterdam less than 90 minutes away by train.

What to Do
  • Strijp-S - The former Philips factory district, now the creative heart of the city with design studios, street food, markets, and nightlife.
  • Van Abbemuseum - One of the best modern and contemporary art museums in the Netherlands.
  • Philips Museum - The story of the company that built the city, in the original 1891 factory building.
  • Dutch Design Week - If you visit in October, the largest design event in Northern Europe takes over the whole city.
  • PSV Eindhoven - One of the country’s top football clubs, at the Philips Stadion in the center.
Getting There

Eindhoven Airport (EIN) is about 8 km northwest of the center and is a major base for budget European airlines, connected to the city by frequent buses in around 25 minutes. For intercontinental flights, Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the main gateway, about 80 to 90 minutes from Eindhoven by direct train.

Getting Around

Eindhoven is compact and easy to cover on foot or by bike, the default way to get around any Dutch city. The regional bus network covers the wider area, and Eindhoven Centraal is the central train hub with fast connections across the Netherlands. There is no metro. An OV-chipkaart or a contactless bank card works on all public transport.

Weather & Timing

Late spring through early autumn (May to September) is the most pleasant time, with mild temperatures and long days. April, when Eurocrypt is held, is cool and changeable, so pack layers and a rain jacket. The big local event is Dutch Design Week in October, when the city fills up and hotels book out.
