Egham United Kingdom

Egham is a small town in Surrey, England, on the southwestern edge of Greater London, best known as the home of Royal Holloway, University of London, whose landmark Founder’s Building is one of the most recognizable Victorian campuses in Britain. For conference attendees the appeal is practical: Egham is one rail stop from the connections into London Waterloo (about 35-40 minutes total), close to Heathrow Airport, and a short distance from Windsor and the Thames-side towns. The town itself is modest, with the conference activity centered on the Royal Holloway campus. Nearby Runnymede, the meadow where Magna Carta was sealed in 1215, is a short walk or drive away.

What to Do
  • Royal Holloway Founder’s Building - A vast Victorian building modeled on a French chateau, with the Royal Holloway Picture Gallery open to visitors.

  • Runnymede - The riverside meadow where Magna Carta was sealed in 1215, with the JFK and Magna Carta memorials, a short distance from campus.

  • Windsor Castle - About 20 minutes away, the oldest occupied castle in the world and an easy half-day trip.

  • Thames Path - Riverside walking between Staines, Egham, and Windsor.

  • Central London - Under an hour by rail for museums, theatre, and dining as an evening or rest-day option.

Getting There

London Heathrow (LHR) is the closest major airport, about 15-20 minutes by taxi or a short bus ride, making Egham one of the most Heathrow-convenient conference locations in the London area. London Gatwick (LGW) is about an hour by road. Central London rail terminals connect onward to the rest of the UK and the Eurostar at St Pancras.

Getting Around

Egham railway station runs frequent South Western Railway services toward London Waterloo via Staines. The Royal Holloway campus is about a 20-minute walk or short bus/taxi from the station. London is reachable in under an hour; central London attractions are an easy day trip. A car is helpful for Windsor and the surrounding area but not required.

Weather & Timing

May to September is the most pleasant, with mild temperatures and long daylight. The Royal Holloway campus and surrounding Surrey countryside are at their best in late spring and summer. British weather is changeable year-round, so a rain layer is always sensible.
