Columbia, South Carolina United States

Columbia is the capital of South Carolina and one of the largest cities in the state, set at the confluence of the Broad and Saluda rivers in the middle of the state. It is anchored by the University of South Carolina, whose historic Horseshoe quad sits right in the downtown grid, and by the State House with its copper dome. The Congaree Riverwalk and the Three Rivers Greenway give the city an active outdoor side, and the Main Street district has filled out with restaurants, breweries, and the Columbia Museum of Art. For conference travelers it is compact, affordable, and easy to navigate, with most of downtown walkable.

What to Do
  • The Horseshoe - The University of South Carolina’s historic quad, shaded by live oaks in the heart of downtown.
  • South Carolina State House - The copper-domed capitol and its monument-filled grounds.
  • Congaree Riverwalk - Riverside trails along the Three Rivers Greenway.
  • Columbia Museum of Art - A strong regional collection on Main Street.
  • Congaree National Park - Old-growth floodplain forest with boardwalk trails, about 30 minutes southeast.
Getting There

Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) is about 12 km southwest of downtown, roughly 15 minutes by car, with connections through Charlotte, Atlanta, and other hubs. Charlotte Douglas International (CLT), a major hub, is about 90 minutes away by car.

Getting Around

Downtown Columbia is laid out on a walkable grid, and most visitors get around on foot or by ride-hailing. The Comet bus network covers the wider city, and a car is useful for anything beyond downtown. Parking is plentiful and inexpensive by big-city standards.

Weather & Timing

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the most pleasant, with warm days and low humidity. Summers are famously hot and humid, often well above 33C, so plan indoor time in July and August. Winters are mild with only occasional frost.
