Coimbra Portugal

Coimbra sits on a limestone hill above the Mondego River in central Portugal, roughly equidistant between Lisbon and Porto at about two hours from each by train. It was Portugal’s medieval capital before Lisbon took that role, and the old city still carries that weight of history - winding cobbled lanes, Romanesque and Manueline churches, and the great hilltop university that has stood here since 1290, making it one of the oldest universities in continuous operation anywhere in the world. The Biblioteca Joanina, the university’s 18th-century baroque library, is one of the most spectacular rooms in Portugal - its gilded shelves and painted ceilings are home to a colony of bats that emerge at night to eat the insects that might damage the books. Coimbra has its own tradition of fado, distinct from the Lisbon style, and typically performed by students in black academic capes at evening concerts in the old city. The lower town along the riverside has a more contemporary character, with cafes, covered market halls, and the kind of neighbourhood streets that reward wandering without a plan. The university’s academic calendar gives the city a seasonal pulse, and outside of summer the presence of students keeps the energy high. Coimbra is also a practical base for visiting the Roman ruins at Conimbriga, one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Portugal, about 15 kilometres to the south.

What to Do

The University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site - one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world (founded 1290), with the extraordinary Joanina Library as its centerpiece. The library has three floors of ornate baroque books and is ticketed; the adjacent Academic Prison and the bell tower are also part of the tour. The old cathedral (Se Velha) is a well-preserved Romanesque building from the 12th century. The lower city along the Rio Mondego has cafes and restaurants where the local fado (Coimbra-style, different from Lisbon’s) is performed on weekday evenings. Queijo da Serra cheese and the local wines from the Bairrada and Dao regions are excellent.

Getting There

Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport in Porto (OPO) is the nearest major airport, about 120 km north of Coimbra. The Alfa Pendular high-speed train from Porto to Coimbra takes about 1 hour. Lisbon Airport (LIS) is also an option (about 2 hours by Alfa Pendular train from Lisbon Santa Apolonia).

Getting Around

Coimbra has a small tram (Mondego), buses (SMTUC), and the famous old student lift (Elevador do Mercado) connecting the upper and lower city. The historic center around the university is very walkable but steep in places. Taxis and rideshare (Uber) are available. The lower city near the train stations is flat.

Weather & Timing

Spring (April-May) is excellent for Coimbra, with warm weather and the Queima das Fitas student festival in May bringing the city alive. Autumn (September-October) is also pleasant and quieter. Summers are hot and dry; winters are mild and rainy.
