Chicago United States

Chicago is one of the most capable conference cities in North America, with a large downtown hotel inventory, strong transport connections, and a convention infrastructure anchored by McCormick Place, the largest convention centre in the US. O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is a major hub with direct routes to most of the world, and Midway Airport (MDW) provides additional domestic capacity. The city centre is accessible from O’Hare in around 45 minutes on the Blue Line L train for around $5 - one of the best airport-to-downtown rail connections in the US. McCormick Place sits on the lakefront south of the Loop, connected to downtown by bus and rideshare, and adjacent to the Museum Campus which houses the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium. The Chicago food scene is exceptional and varied, from deep-dish pizza and Chicago-style hot dogs to a dense cluster of acclaimed restaurants in the West Loop and River North neighbourhoods. November in Chicago is cold (average highs 6-9C) with occasional early snow - a warm layer and waterproof jacket are essential.

What to Do

The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the finest art museums in the world, with an exceptional Impressionist and American collections. Millennium Park has the Cloud Gate sculpture (“The Bean”), the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, and excellent people-watching year-round. The Riverwalk along the Chicago River is a great way to see the iconic skyscraper canyon. The deep-dish pizza debate is fun but the city also has exceptional thin-crust, tavern-style pizza, Italian beef sandwiches, and a world-class fine dining scene across multiple neighborhoods.

Getting There

O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is 17 miles northwest of downtown, with the Blue Line CTA train running to the Loop in about 45 minutes around the clock. Midway Airport (MDW) on the southwest side is closer to some neighborhoods and connects to downtown via the Orange Line in about 30 minutes.

Getting Around

Chicago’s CTA rail network (the L) is one of the most extensive in the US, with lines running 24 hours on some routes. The Loop, River North, Magnificent Mile, and Near North Side are all walkable and well-served by the L. Rideshare is available but traffic can be severe during peak hours.

Weather & Timing

Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are the prime times - mild temperatures, low humidity, and the city at its most energetic. Summers can be very hot and humid but Lake Michigan breezes help. Winters are famously harsh, with wind chills making temperatures feel extreme; February in particular should be approached with appropriate gear.
