Cancun Mexico

Cancun is a planned resort city on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, built from almost nothing in the 1970s and now the busiest tourist destination in Mexico. For a conference attendee the important thing is that it is really two places.

The Zona Hotelera is a narrow barrier island shaped like the number 7, running 22 km along a single road, Boulevard Kukulcan. Addresses here are given as kilometre markers rather than street numbers, so a hotel at Km 9 and one at Km 16 are a 20 minute drive apart. Beach on one side, the Nichupte Lagoon on the other, and almost everything on it is a resort.

El Centro, on the mainland, is where most of the city’s 900,000 people actually live. It is less polished and considerably cheaper, and it is where to go for proper food rather than hotel buffets. The Mercado 28 and the taquerias around Avenida Yaxchilan are the usual recommendations.

Cancun is also the gateway to the Maya sites. Chichen Itza and Tulum are both day trips, and there are small ruins inside the Hotel Zone itself.

What to Do
  • Chichen Itza - the best known Maya site in the world, about 200 km west and a long but standard day trip. Go early to beat the coaches.
  • Tulum - a smaller Maya site but on a cliff above the Caribbean, about 130 km south, and the more photogenic of the two.
  • Isla Mujeres - a small island 13 km offshore, reached by ferry from Puerto Juarez in about 20 minutes. Golf carts, quiet beaches, and a far better half day than staying in the Hotel Zone.
  • Museo Maya de Cancun - a genuinely good archaeology museum at Km 16.5, with the San Miguelito ruins on the same site.
  • El Rey ruins - a small Maya site at Km 18 inside the Hotel Zone, overrun with iguanas, and a half hour well spent if you have no time for Chichen Itza.
  • Mercado 28 - the downtown market, for food rather than souvenirs.
Getting There

Cancun International (CUN) is the second busiest airport in Mexico and sits about 16 km south of the Hotel Zone, with direct flights from across North America and Europe. Allow a while at immigration in high season.

Getting in: the ADO bus runs from all terminals to the downtown bus station for about 120 pesos and is the cheapest reliable option. Pre-booked shuttles and app rides are straightforward. Ignore the people who approach you in the arrivals hall offering transport or a free stay, which is a timeshare pitch and a long-standing fixture of this airport. Official taxi desks are outside, past the doors.

Getting Around

The R1 and R2 buses run the length of Boulevard Kukulcan between the Hotel Zone and El Centro, every few minutes, all day and most of the night, for a flat fare of around 12 pesos paid in cash to the driver. They are the way locals and most visitors move around, and they are far cheaper than taxis, which are unmetered and expensive and should be agreed on before you get in. Because the Hotel Zone is one long road, you cannot really get lost: everything is either towards El Centro or away from it. Walking between adjacent resorts works, but the kilometre markers are deceptive and there is not much shade. ADO runs comfortable long-distance coaches from the downtown bus terminal to Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Merida.

Weather & Timing

December to April is the dry season and the reason most people come: 24 to 29C, low humidity, little rain. It is also the most expensive and most crowded.

CHES 2027 runs 6 to 9 September, which is the peak of Atlantic hurricane season. The season runs June to November and August through October is its most active stretch. September is also hot and very humid, around 28 to 33C, with afternoon downpours, and it is the cheapest time of year to visit for exactly those reasons. Direct hurricane strikes on Cancun are not common in any given week, but flight disruption across the region is a real possibility, so this is a trip worth booking with a flexible fare and travel insurance.

Where to Stay for a Conference

CHES 2027 has not announced a venue, so there is no walking distance to optimise for yet. The default assumption for a Cancun conference is the Zona Hotelera, and specifically the Punta Cancun area around Km 9, which is the island’s elbow: it has the convention facilities, the densest cluster of large hotels, and the shortest bus ride in either direction. The Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach and Krystal Cancun both sit there.

Further south, around Km 14 to 16.5, the resorts get larger and quieter and the beach gets better, but you are committing to a bus or taxi for everything. The JW Marriott, Marriott Cancun Resort and Fiesta Americana Condesa are in that stretch.

El Centro is the budget option and it is a real one: downtown hotels cost a fraction of Hotel Zone rates and the R1 bus connects them to the island in 20 to 30 minutes. Worth it if you would rather spend the money on Chichen Itza than on a beach you will see for two hours. Note that most Hotel Zone resorts here are all-inclusive, which is poor value if you intend to eat downtown or be in sessions all day, so check whether a room-only rate is available.
