Canberra Australia

Canberra is the capital of Australia, a planned city laid out in the early 20th century between Sydney and Melbourne as a compromise capital. It is unusually green and spacious, built around Lake Burley Griffin and a series of national institutions, including Parliament House, the National Gallery, and the Australian National University. It is quieter and more orderly than the big coastal cities, and it serves as the country’s political and academic center. For conference visitors it offers excellent museums, good food, and easy access to the surrounding bush and wine regions.

What to Do
  • Australian War Memorial - One of the country’s most visited and moving institutions.
  • National Gallery and museums - World-class collections around the lake.
  • Lake Burley Griffin - Cycling and walking paths around the central lake.
  • Parliament House - The striking modern seat of government, open to visitors.
Getting There

Canberra Airport (CBR) is about 8 km east of the center, with direct domestic flights to Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane and limited international services. Sydney is about three hours away by road for more international connections.

Getting Around

Canberra is spread out and designed around cars, but a light rail line and bus network serve the main areas, and the central districts are walkable. Rental cars and ride-hailing are common for reaching attractions across the city. A MyWay card or contactless payment covers public transport.

Weather & Timing

Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are the most pleasant, with mild days and clear skies. Summers are warm and dry, and winters are cold with frosty mornings. The city is at its best when the autumn leaves turn.
