Brussels sits at the heart of Europe both geographically and politically, hosting the EU institutions, NATO headquarters, and dozens of international research bodies that give the city a deeply international character. The historic center is anchored by the Grand Place, one of the finest market squares in Europe, ringed by gilded guild halls and a constant flow of visitors. A few kilometres south, the Ixelles and Saint-Gilles districts have a younger, more bohemian feel, with Art Nouveau townhouses designed by Victor Horta lining the streets alongside independent restaurants and Michelin-starred tables. Belgian cuisine is taken seriously here - mussels, frites, and an astonishing variety of craft beers are the staples, and the city punches well above its weight for fine dining. The Atomium and the Musee Magritte draw visitors but the city rewards slower exploration, particularly the Sablon antiques quarter and the covered Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert. Conference attendees staying near the city center can reach the university and conference venues by tram in under 20 minutes.
The Grand Place is the obvious starting point and deserves the reputation, a UNESCO listed square of guildhalls best seen early or late when the crowds thin. Brussels is the world capital of Art Nouveau, and the Horta Museum in Saint-Gilles, the architect’s own house, is the single best thing to see if you have one free afternoon. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts and the adjoining Magritte Museum cover the Belgian surrealists properly. For a change of register, the Atomium out at Heysel is a 102 metre model of an iron crystal built for the 1958 World’s Fair and is exactly as strange as that sounds. Eating and drinking is the real draw: Belgian beer is a UNESCO listed cultural practice, the cafes around Saint-Gery and Chatelain are where to try it away from the tourist strip, and the chocolate shops around the Sablon are worth the detour. The comic strip route through the centre puts Tintin and the Smurfs on gable walls across the city.
Brussels Airport (BRU) is 12km northeast of the city center, connected by the Airport City Express train (20 minutes to Brussels-Central, trains every 15 minutes). Brussels-South Charleroi Airport (CRL) serves budget carriers and is 60km south, with Flibco bus service to Brussels-Midi taking around 50 minutes.
Brussels has a metro, tram, and bus network operated by STIB/MIVB. Trams are the most useful for reaching Ixelles and the university quarter from the city center. A 24-hour or 48-hour pass is the most economical option for conference attendees. The city is compact enough that many central locations are walkable from the Grand Place. Taxis and rideshares are available but not necessary for most conference travel.
April through June is the most pleasant stretch, with mild temperatures and long days. September and October are also good and quieter than summer. Winter is grey and often wet, with January and February hovering around 3 to 7C, which matters because the turn of January into February is when the city’s largest technology event fills the hotels: rates that weekend are the exception to an otherwise cheap low season. The Christmas market around the Grand Place from late November is the one genuinely good reason to visit in the cold, and July brings the Belgian National Day festivities on the 21st.

Brussels has plenty of hotel stock, but the right choice depends on the venue, and for the big university conferences the venue is not in the centre. The ULB Solbosch campus, where FOSDEM is held, sits in residential Ixelles about 3 km south east of the Grand Place, and there are no hotels immediately beside it. Optimise for tram access rather than walking distance: trams 7 and 25 and bus 71 all serve the campus, and anywhere on those lines is a fifteen minute ride. The Louise and Flagey areas of Ixelles are the closest pleasant places to stay, roughly 2 to 3 km out, with better food than the tourist centre. The centre around the Grand Place has the deepest supply and the best metro connections, which is why most attendees end up there. One local quirk worth exploiting: the EU quarter is full of business hotels that empty out at weekends, so rates there often drop sharply on exactly the weekends that conferences run. Book early regardless for the FOSDEM weekend at the start of February, because it draws several thousand people to a free event and the affordable rooms go months ahead.
