Bruges Belgium

Bruges barely needs an introduction: the entire medieval center is a UNESCO site, canals thread beneath step-gabled houses, and the Belfry has watched over the Markt for seven centuries. It is also a functioning small city that hosts international meetings at the Concertgebouw, the modern concert hall on ‘t Zand square where EUSIPCO 2026 convenes. Late August brings warm evenings, long canal-side dinners, and the year’s best light for the postcard everyone takes from Rozenhoedkaai.

What to Do
  • The Belfry and the Markt - climb the 366 steps early, before the square fills.
  • Canal loop and Rozenhoedkaai - the classic walk; a boat tour earns its cliche.
  • Groeninge Museum - the Flemish Primitives, van Eyck above all.
  • De Halve Maan brewery - the family brewery with the famous beer pipeline under the city.
Getting There

Brussels (BRU) is about 90 minutes by direct train; Brussels South Charleroi serves budget routes with a coach link. Many UK visitors come via Eurostar to Brussels.

Getting Around

Everything inside the ring is walkable; bikes are the local default. Trains run to Brussels in an hour and to the coast in 15 minutes; the station is a 15 minute walk from the Markt.

Weather & Timing

April-June and September are the sweet spots; late August (EUSIPCO week) is warm (18-24C) and busy with summer visitors, so book early. December is Christmas-market magic.
