Braunschweig Germany

Braunschweig, Germany

Braunschweig, also known as Brunswick, is a dynamic research and innovation hub in northern Germany. Blending medieval heritage with cutting-edge science, it’s home to major universities, research institutes, and technology centers.

Conference visitors can explore its historic market square, the medieval cathedral, and the lively Magniviertel district filled with cafés and local shops. The city’s compact layout makes it easy to walk or cycle between venues, museums, and restaurants.

With excellent rail connections to Hannover and Berlin, Braunschweig offers a perfect balance of professional focus and cultural exploration, ideal for productive and inspiring conference experiences.

What to Do

Braunschweig is a mid-sized university city (home to Technische Universitat Braunschweig) with a well-preserved historic center rebuilt after World War II damage. The Braunschweig Cathedral (Dom St. Blasii) houses the tomb of Henry the Lion, the 12th-century Duke of Saxony. The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum is one of Germany’s oldest public art museums with a strong collection of Old Masters. Burgplatz, the historic city center square with the famous Brunswick Lion monument, is pleasant for an evening stroll. Hannover is an easy 45-minute train ride for those wanting a larger city experience.

Getting There

Hannover Airport (HAJ) is about 60 km northwest of Braunschweig, connected by regional train in about 45 minutes. Braunschweig Airport (BWE) has limited scheduled service. Frankfurt (FRA) and Hamburg (HAM) are also within reasonable train or driving distance.

Getting Around

Braunschweig has a comprehensive tram network (Stadtbahn) covering the city center and university districts. The historic center around the Dom and Burgplatz is walkable. Rideshare is available; cycling is practical throughout the flat city.

Weather & Timing

Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are the most comfortable, with mild temperatures and lower chance of rain. Summers are warm and pleasant. Winters are cold but rarely extreme; December brings good Christmas market atmosphere.
