Berlin Germany

Berlin is one of Europe’s most distinctive capitals, a city that reinvented itself after reunification and now draws researchers, entrepreneurs, designers, and technologists from across the world. The city’s scale and density mean conference attendees rarely have to stray far for great food, interesting neighbourhoods, or cultural institutions of the highest calibre. The museum island on the Spree houses five UNESCO-listed museums including the Pergamon and the Neues Museum. The Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe are within walking distance of each other in the city center. The East Side Gallery preserves the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall as an open-air street art museum along the Spree. Berlin’s food scene spans everything from Michelin-starred tasting menus to Turkish durum stands on Kottbusser Damm, Vietnamese pho in Lichtenberg, and a thriving brunch culture in Prenzlauer Berg. The city is famously affordable by Western European standards, with a wide range of accommodation from international business hotels to design hostels. Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) serves the city, with direct connections from major European hubs, New York, and a growing number of long-haul routes.

What to Do
  • Museum Island - Five world-class museums on an island in the Spree, including the Pergamon (under renovation until 2027 for the main hall), Bode Museum, and Altes Museum.

  • East Side Gallery - 1.3 km of preserved Berlin Wall with international murals; free and open 24 hours.

  • Reichstag dome - Free to visit the glass dome and rooftop walk of the German parliament building; registration required online.

  • Kreuzberg and Neukölln - The best neighbourhoods for food, bars, and street life; Bergmannstrasse market and the Turkish Market on Maybachufer are highlights.

  • Potsdam - The royal Prussian palaces and parks of Sanssouci make a half-day trip about 30 minutes from central Berlin by S-Bahn.

Getting There

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) serves the city, about 30 minutes from central Berlin by the Airport Express (FEX) train, which runs every 15 minutes and costs around 4 EUR with a standard Berlin ABC ticket. Taxis cost 40-50 EUR and take 35-50 minutes depending on traffic. The airport has both a Terminal 1 and the older Terminal 2.

Getting Around

Berlin’s U-Bahn (underground) and S-Bahn (overground) together cover the entire city with high frequency. A 24-hour or 7-day Berlin ABC ticket covers all zones including the airport. Trams run extensively in the eastern districts. Cycling is practical on a well-developed lane network; the DB Rad and Nextbike schemes are widely available. Taxis and rideshare are reliable for late-night journeys.

Weather & Timing

May through September is ideal for Berlin: long daylight hours, outdoor cafe culture, open-air cinema and concert season. June and July can reach 30C+ during heatwaves. October conferences catch warm autumn weather. Winter is cold (0-5C) with limited daylight but excellent Christmas markets and museum weather.
