Bergen Norway
Bergen, often called the “Gateway to the Fjords,” is one of Norway’s most scenic and culturally rich cities. It’s a perfect place to extend your stay before or after a conference.
- Fjord Adventures: Bergen is the starting point for exploring Norway’s world-famous fjords, including UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord and Sognefjord. Boat tours and scenic rail journeys make it easy to experience dramatic landscapes.
- Historic Bryggen Wharf: Stroll through the colorful Hanseatic-era wooden buildings, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and explore cozy cafés, boutiques, and museums.
- Mountains & Views: Surrounded by seven mountains, Bergen offers breathtaking panoramas. Take the Fløibanen funicular to Mount Fløyen or ride the Ulriken cable car for hiking and spectacular city views.
- Culture & Cuisine: Enjoy fresh seafood at the Fish Market, or visit the KODE art museums and Edvard Grieg’s home at Troldhaugen for a taste of local history and music.
- Atmosphere: With its mix of history, modern Scandinavian design, and lively cultural events, Bergen combines small-city charm with global appeal.
Staying a few extra days in Bergen turns a work trip into a memorable journey—balancing professional commitments with Norway’s natural beauty and cultural richness.
The Bryggen Wharf - the UNESCO-listed row of colourful Hanseatic wooden buildings along the harbor - is the defining image of Bergen. The Floibanen funicular to the top of Mount Floyen (320m) takes 8 minutes and gives panoramic views over the fjords and city; hiking trails continue from the summit. The Fish Market (Fisketorget) on the harbor has excellent fresh seafood stands for lunch. The KODE art museums are a group of four buildings with strong Norwegian and international collections. Bergen is the gateway to the Western Fjords - the Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord are accessible by boat and train for memorable day or multi-day excursions.
Bergen Airport Flesland (BGO) is 20 km south of the city center. The Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) runs from the airport to the city center in about 45 minutes, with stops at major neighborhoods along the way. Taxis are available but expensive by international standards.
The Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) covers the main corridor from the airport through the city to Nesttun. Skyss buses cover the wider city and fjord connections. The Bryggen wharf area and the city center are very walkable. The funicular (Floibanen) is both a practical hillside transport option and a major attraction.
Bergen is famously one of the rainiest cities in Europe, so managing expectations matters. June to August is the driest period with temperatures around 18-22C and the longest days. May is often excellent and less crowded than summer. The city functions beautifully in rain and has strong indoor cultural offerings year-round.
