Benevento Italy

Benevento sits in the hills an hour and a half inland from Naples, a city the Romans knew as Beneventum, and its past is astonishingly present: the Arch of Trajan is one of the best-preserved Roman arches anywhere, the Roman theatre still hosts performances, and the UNESCO-listed church of Santa Sofia dates to 760. Around the monuments is a workaday Campanian town of good, cheap restaurants and the famous Strega liqueur, distilled by the station since 1860. It is small, friendly, and blissfully untouristed.

What to Do
  • Arch of Trajan - the 114 AD triumphal arch, remarkably intact and floodlit at night.
  • Roman Theatre - the 2nd-century theatre in the old quarter, still in use on summer evenings.
  • Santa Sofia and its cloister - the UNESCO Lombard church with the Museo del Sannio next door.
  • Strega distillery shop - taste the saffron-yellow liqueur where it is made, by the station.
Getting There

Naples International (NAP) is the gateway, about 1.5 hours by car or bus; Rome’s airports are 2.5-3 hours. Rail via Caserta or Napoli Centrale is the usual public route.

Getting Around

The center is compact and walkable. Trains and buses connect to Naples (about 1.5-2 hours) and to Rome via Caserta; a taxi or the occasional local bus covers the hill neighborhoods. A car helps for exploring the surrounding Sannio wine country.

Weather & Timing

May, June, and September are the sweet months: warm (24-30C), dry, and lively with evening passeggiata. August is hot and half-closed for holidays; September conference weeks catch the wine harvest atmosphere.
