Belfast United Kingdom

Belfast sits at the head of Belfast Lough on the northeastern coast of Ireland, a city that has remade itself dramatically over the past two decades. The waterfront Titanic Quarter, built on the historic shipyard where RMS Titanic was constructed, is now home to the Titanic Belfast museum and a growing cluster of creative and tech businesses. The Cathedral Quarter, a short walk north of City Hall, anchors the city’s arts and nightlife scene with converted Victorian linen warehouses turned into bars, galleries, and music venues. City Hall itself is a striking Edwardian baroque building at the centre of the pedestrianised shopping area. For a conference traveler, the city centre is compact and walkable - most hotels, the conference facilities at the Assembly Buildings, and the main restaurants are within 15 minutes on foot. The Botanic Gardens and Ulster Museum are a short walk south toward the Queen’s University campus. Day trips to the Causeway Coast, including the Giant’s Causeway and the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, are about 90 minutes by car or bus and worth the effort for first-time visitors. Belfast is also frequently used as a filming location - Titanic Studios and the surrounding area were used for much of Game of Thrones.

What to Do

Titanic Belfast is the standout attraction - a six-storey museum built in the shape of a ship’s bow on the original slipway where Titanic was constructed, highly recommended even for visitors with no prior interest in the ship. The Cathedral Quarter around Hill Street and Commercial Court is the best area for bars, restaurants, and live music. The Crown Liquor Saloon on Great Victoria Street is a Victorian gin palace and National Trust property worth a stop. The Botanic Gardens and Ulster Museum are free and a good half-morning. For murals and recent history, the Falls Road and Shankill Road political murals are best seen with a black taxi tour whose drivers provide their own distinctive commentary.

Getting There

Belfast International Airport (BFS) is 18 km northwest of the city, served by easyJet, Ryanair, and TUI among others. George Best Belfast City Airport (BHD) is 5 km from the centre and handles UK domestic routes and some European flights. Airporter coaches run from both airports to the city centre.

Getting Around

Belfast city centre is compact and walkable. Translink Metro buses cover the wider city. Black taxi tours are a popular way to see the political murals in the Falls Road and Shankill Road areas. Enterprise trains run to Dublin in about 2 hours. For the Causeway Coast, a car or organised coach tour is the most practical option.

Weather & Timing

May to September offers the best weather, with temperatures reaching 17-20C in summer and long evenings. July and August are peak season. The city is also pleasant in spring (April-May) with fewer crowds. Winter is mild by UK standards but grey and rainy.
