Banff Canada
Banff is a small resort town of about 8,000 permanent residents inside Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, about 130 kilometres west of Calgary. It sits at 1,400 metres elevation in the Bow Valley, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery on all sides. The town is tightly regulated to preserve the national park - there are a finite number of hotel beds and the inventory does not grow, which means conference weeks drive prices sharply upward and rooms sell out months in advance. For academic conferences, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity on Tunnel Mountain is the primary venue, and its on-site accommodation is typically allocated to conference delegates first. The rest of the town has a mix of hotel chains, boutique properties, and the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs castle on Spray Avenue. Calgary International Airport is the entry point for most international attendees, with shuttle services and rental cars covering the 90-minute drive through the mountains to Banff.
- Bow Falls and the Fairmont Banff Springs - A 20-minute walk from downtown along the Bow River leads to the falls and the castle hotel, one of the most photographed buildings in Canada.
- Sulphur Mountain gondola - A 8-minute gondola ride from the base station to 2,281 metres for panoramic Rocky Mountain views; the boardwalk at the top follows the ridgeline.
- Lake Louise - 57 km west of Banff, one of the most famous alpine lakes in the world. Day trip by car or shuttle; worth arriving early before the crowds.
- Johnston Canyon - A popular trail 26 km west of Banff through a slot canyon to waterfalls; can be combined with a Lake Louise visit.
- Banff Upper Hot Springs - Historic natural hot spring pool on Sulphur Mountain, a short drive or bus ride from downtown.
Calgary International Airport (YYC) is 130 km east, about 90 minutes by car. The Banff Airporter shuttle runs several times daily between YYC and Banff hotels (approximately CAD $70 each way). Rental cars are available at YYC for those wanting flexibility for mountain day trips.
Banff is small enough to walk across in 20 minutes. Banff Avenue is the main street. A free Roam Transit bus runs between major hotels, the town centre, and the Banff Centre. Taxis are available but expensive. Rental cars from Calgary are useful for day trips to Lake Louise and Icefields Parkway.
Summer (June-August) is warm and busy, with temperatures of 20-25C and long daylight hours. June is ideal for academic conferences - before peak tourist season, pleasant weather, and wildflowers in the mountains. Snow is possible at any time of year above treeline.

Book as early as possible - Banff hotel inventory is among the most constrained of any conference city in North America. The Banff Centre has on-site rooms that are usually reserved for conference delegates. The Fairmont Banff Springs is the iconic luxury option.
