Austin United States

Austin has grown rapidly into one of the most prominent tech conference cities in the US, home to SXSW and increasingly chosen for major computing and engineering events. The city combines a lively food and music culture along 6th Street and Rainey Street with a downtown convention district anchored by the Austin Convention Center, a short walk from most major hotels. The tech industry presence is significant - Tesla, Apple, and dozens of startups have major offices here - which gives the city a natural fit for computing and networking conferences. Summers are hot (35C+ in July and August) but October is one of the best months to visit, with temperatures cooling to a comfortable 18-27C range and reliably low humidity. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is about 8 miles from downtown, a 20-25 minute drive or rideshare.

What to Do
  • Sixth Street - The live music corridor is at its best on Thursday through Saturday nights; the variety of genres playing simultaneously across dozens of venues is the real Austin experience.
  • South Congress Avenue - The best street in Austin for independent shops, vintage clothing, food trucks, and people-watching; Hotel San Jose and the Continental Club are landmarks.
  • Franklin Barbecue - Queue from 8am for central Texas brisket that many consider the best in the world; they sell out by noon most days.
  • Barton Springs Pool - A natural spring-fed swimming pool in Zilker Park; constant 20C water year-round makes it popular in every season.
  • Lady Bird Lake kayaking - Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from the Rowing Dock; the downtown skyline view from the water is excellent.
  • UT Austin campus walk - The Blanton Museum of Art and the LBJ Presidential Library are both on campus and free or very cheap to enter.
Getting There

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is about 8 miles southeast of downtown. No rail service connects the airport to the city; rideshare and taxis are the main options, taking 15-25 minutes without traffic. A future Project Connect light rail line to the airport is planned but not yet operational.

Getting Around

Austin is primarily car and rideshare dependent. Cap Metro buses and the MetroRail commuter line provide some coverage, but most conference attendees rely on rideshare. Downtown, 6th Street, and the Warehouse District are walkable, though the wider city is spread out.

Weather & Timing

Spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November) are excellent with warm but manageable temperatures. Summers are very hot (regularly above 38C) and humid, though the city rarely slows down. SXSW in March brings massive crowds and hotel price spikes. Winters are mild and sunny.

Where to Stay for a Conference

Austin’s conferences center on the Austin Convention Center and connected downtown hotels such as the JW Marriott. Staying downtown between the convention center and Congress Avenue keeps you walking distance from the venue and the 6th Street and Rainey Street nightlife districts. Downtown hotels fill quickly and price up sharply during SXSW and other large events, so book early. The airport is about 20 minutes away by rideshare with no direct rail link.
