Amsterdam Netherlands

Amsterdam is a highly practical conference city: Schiphol Airport is one of Europe’s busiest hubs with direct connections to most of the world, and the city centre is compact enough that most conference hotels, the RAI convention centre, and the main cultural attractions are reachable without a car. The RAI Amsterdam is the city’s principal convention centre, located in the southern residential district about 10 minutes from the centre by tram or metro. The city itself is well-known for its canal ring, museums including the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, and a lively food and bar scene concentrated around Leidseplein and the Jordaan neighbourhood. Amsterdam is bike-friendly to a degree unusual for a major city - rental bikes are widely available and many locals use them to get between venues. Hotel rates in Amsterdam can be high during major events, so booking early is strongly recommended for conferences at the RAI.

What to Do
  • Rijksmuseum - The Dutch Golden Age collection featuring Rembrandt and Vermeer; book timed entry online to avoid long queues.
  • Anne Frank House - Book tickets weeks in advance online; walk-up entry is essentially impossible in peak season.
  • Jordaan neighbourhood - The most beautiful part of the canal ring; boutique galleries, the Westerkerk, and the city’s best brown cafes (bruine kroegen) for an Amstel and bitterballen.
  • Cycling the countryside - Rent a bike and cycle west to Haarlem (30 min) or north to Waterland; the flat polder landscape is extraordinary and completely accessible.
  • FOAM Photography Museum - A world-class photography museum on the Keizersgracht; consistently excellent temporary exhibitions.
  • Albert Cuyp Market - The largest street market in the Netherlands; a long stall-lined street in De Pijp with stroopwafels, herring, cheese, and fresh produce.
Getting There

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is one of Europe’s best-connected hubs, just 17 km from the city centre. Direct trains run every 15 min to Amsterdam Centraal in 17 min (~5 EUR). Taxis cost around 35-50 EUR. The station is directly below the terminal - no shuttle required.

Getting Around

Amsterdam’s central area is extremely bikeable - this is possibly the world’s most cycling-friendly major city. Bike rentals start at ~10 EUR/day from dozens of shops near Centraal station. Trams run frequently through the centre. The GVB day pass (~9 EUR) covers tram, bus, and metro. Walking between central venues is usually fastest of all.

Weather & Timing

Spring (April-May) brings tulip season and pleasant 12-18C weather - the most iconic time to visit but also the most crowded. Summer (June-August) is warm (20-25C) and lively but busy. Autumn and winter conferences get a quieter, atmospheric city - bring waterproofs as rain is common year-round.
