Alexandria United States
Alexandria sits on the Potomac just south of Washington DC, and its Old Town is one of the best preserved colonial districts in the United States: red-brick townhouses, cobbled side streets and a working waterfront, centred on King Street. The city has changed character in recent years with the arrival of Amazon’s second headquarters in neighbouring National Landing and the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in Alexandria itself, which has pulled a genuine technology and research cluster into what was a historic riverside town. For a conference it is an unusually good combination: the venue density of the DC metro area with a walkable historic centre attached.
- King Street - A mile of independent shops, bars and restaurants running from the Metro down to the Potomac, and the spine of Old Town.
- Torpedo Factory Art Center - A First World War munitions plant on the waterfront converted into open artist studios you can walk through.
- Mount Vernon - George Washington’s estate, 8 miles south along a riverside trail that is a good cycle or a short drive.
- Washington DC - The Smithsonian museums and the Mall are 20 minutes by Metro and all free to enter.
- Old Town waterfront - Boardwalk, boat tours and the seasonal water taxi across to National Harbor.
Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) is the closest by a wide margin, about 10 minutes away and two Metro stops from Old Town, and it is the airport to aim for. Dulles (IAD) is roughly 45 minutes west and handles most long-haul international flights. Baltimore/Washington (BWI) is about an hour north and often cheaper. Union Station in DC is 20 minutes by Metro for Amtrak arrivals.
The Metro is the backbone. King Street-Old Town station on the Blue and Yellow lines puts you a few minutes from central Washington and is walkable to most of Old Town, with a free King Street trolley running from the station down to the waterfront. Reagan National Airport is two stops away. Old Town itself is best on foot, and a water taxi crosses to National Harbor and DC in season.
April to June and September to early November are the good windows, with mild temperatures and the cherry blossom season in early April drawing crowds to the wider DC area. July and August are hot and very humid. Late September, when CLUSTER runs, is one of the better weeks of the year here.

Old Town is the obvious base and where nearly all the hotels are: walkable, on the Metro, and full of places to eat in the evening. Within it, the blocks around King Street Metro station suit anyone commuting to a venue outside the centre, while the lower end near the waterfront is quieter and prettier. The Carlyle district just west of the station is newer, more corporate and usually a little cheaper. Rates track the Washington DC market, so they climb during congressional session weeks and the spring cherry blossom period, and drop in mid-summer when the humidity arrives.
