ICML 2026 Seoul: Travel Guide and Where to Stay

ICML 2026 Seoul: Travel Guide and Where to Stay

   //   4 min read

The International Conference on Machine Learning returns to Asia in 2026, landing at COEX Convention & Exhibition Center in Seoul, South Korea, July 6-11. ICML is A* ranked and consistently one of the most attended research conferences in any field — expect 10,000+ registrations between in-person and virtual. If you’re planning the trip, here’s what to know.

The venue: COEX in Gangnam

COEX sits in the Gangnam district, one of the best-connected conference venues in Asia. The complex includes over 36,000 m² of exhibition space, 55 flexible meeting rooms, and direct underground connection to Starfield COEX Mall — one of the largest underground shopping centres in Asia. Three 5-star hotels sit within the complex. Samseong Station (Line 2) is directly connected.

The area around COEX is dense with hotels at every price point, restaurants, and transport connections. It’s a genuinely convenient base for the conference.

Getting to Seoul

From the airport: Incheon International Airport (ICN) is consistently rated among the world’s best airports. The AREX express train connects Incheon to Seoul Station in about 45 minutes, then Line 2 east to Samseong takes another 15 minutes. Total journey: around an hour. Taxis from Incheon to Gangnam run around 60,000-80,000 KRW (~$45-60 USD) depending on traffic.

Gimpo Airport (GMP) handles domestic flights and a few regional routes (Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai). It’s closer — about 30-40 minutes to Gangnam by metro.

Within Seoul: The metro system is excellent — cheap, frequent, well-signposted in English, and air-conditioned. A T-money card (available at any convenience store) handles metro, buses, and some taxis. July in Seoul is warm and humid with occasional heavy rain, so the underground connections from Samseong Station to COEX are particularly useful.

Where to stay

Hotels near COEX fall into two clusters: Gangnam/Samseong (walking distance to the venue) and slightly further afield for better rates. Book early — ICML draws serious numbers and Gangnam fills up.

Splurge

The Westin Seoul Parnas is adjacent to COEX with direct underground access to the convention centre. Indoor pool, spa, multiple restaurants. The closest luxury option to the venue — if budget isn’t a constraint, this is the easiest choice.

Oakwood Premier COEX Center sits within the COEX complex itself. Serviced residence format with full kitchens — well suited for longer stays or if you want more space than a standard hotel room.

Mid-range

GLAD Gangnam COEX Center is a polished 4-star business hotel steps from Samseong Station, well-priced for its proximity. Quiet rooms, solid WiFi, on-site restaurant. Good all-round choice for most attendees.

Hotel In 9 Gangnam offers a rooftop pool and good city views — a reasonable step up in feel without the full luxury price tag.

Hotel Uri& includes sauna and fitness facilities and sits close to Samseong Station. A solid pick if wellness amenities matter after a long day of sessions.

Budget

Shilla Stay Samsung (3-star) is one of the better-value options in the immediate area — the Shilla brand is reliable, the location across from Samsung Station is convenient, and rates are meaningfully lower than the 4-star options.

Hotel Peyto Samseong (3-star) is a short walk from Samseong Station with a clean modern fit-out and lower rates. Good for cost-conscious attendees who still want a private room.

Student / hostel options

Several hostels cluster in the Gangnam area. Goyoo Inn & Cabins offers capsule pods near COEX — good for solo travellers who just need a clean place to sleep. YaKorea Hostel Gangnam has shared kitchen and social spaces, popular with grad students. The Ja Coex Hostel is the closest budget option to the convention centre itself.

Food and neighbourhoods

Around COEX: The Starfield COEX Mall has a large food court and dozens of restaurants. Teheran-ro (the main Gangnam artery) is lined with cafes and restaurants from Korean BBQ to Japanese ramen to international chains.

Garosu-gil: A 10-minute walk south from Samseong Station, tree-lined street with independent cafes, boutiques, and a younger crowd. Good for evening dinners and coffee between sessions.

Itaewon: 20 minutes by metro from Samseong, Seoul’s most internationally diverse neighbourhood. Wide range of cuisines, good cocktail bars, popular with conference visitors wanting a change of scene.

Insadong and Bukchon: For anyone extending their trip, these traditional neighbourhoods north of the river are worth half a day — hanok houses, tea shops, and the Gyeongbokgung Palace are a complete contrast to Gangnam.

Weather in July

Seoul in early July is hot and humid — average highs around 28-30°C — with the tail end of the rainy season (jangma) potentially bringing heavy downpours. Pack a light rain jacket. COEX’s underground connections to hotels and the mall mean you can stay mostly indoors between sessions if needed.

Workshops and tutorials

ICML 2026 runs workshops on July 11. A full listing of confirmed workshops is at workwander.tech/conference/icml_2026. If you’re attending primarily for a workshop rather than the main track, factor in that the workshop day is separate from the main conference dates when booking accommodation.
